Pathway Programs

A range of new Postgraduate Certificates and Postgraduate Diplomas in Research methods or preparation is now available for applicants who may not meet the admission criteria and/or do not have adequate research experience or background in their chosen discipline to commence a research degree immediately. When you are close to completion of the preliminary program you must submit a fresh application for admission to the higher research degree that you wish to pursue. Applications for preliminary programs are made through the Postgraduate Studies Section for domestic students and through Macquarie International for international students. Enquiries for application material: Student Enquiry Service (domestic) and Macquarie International (international).

Pathways to PhD Study

Please choose your highest qualification from the below options to identify the best pathway to a PhD:

* a credit minimum in postgraduate unit results is usually required.


Bachelor Degree only

Further study must be undertaken in a Postgraduate Coursework program which contains the required levels of research training.

Examples are:

PG Certificate (100% research)
PG Diploma
(50% research)
Masters by Coursework
(25% research)

Bachelor Degree with demonstrated research equivalence

Research equivalence in some of the following areas must be demonstrated.

Experience of research training activity in a professional setting. Evidence of completed research training e.g. research project completion.

Research training capacity as evidenced in professional work experience.

Published papers in refereed journals, other publications or equivalent creative material.

Bachelor Degree with Honours

If you have a First class or Upper second class Honours degree then you may be able to enter a PhD program directly.

Alternatively, if you get a lower class of Honours in your Bachelor Degree then you will usually need to complete further study such as the following coursework programs:

PG Certificate (100% research)
PG Diploma
(50% research)
Masters by Coursework
(25% research)

Masters by Coursework with no research component *

If your coursework Masters did not have a research component you will need to complete further studies in research before entering a PhD program such as:

PG Certificate (100% research)

Masters by Coursework with a research component *

If your Masters by course-work program contained at least 25% research you may be able to move directly into a PhD program.
