The Vice-Chancellor receives advice on research policy from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and a number of Research & Research Related Committees (PDF), who provide specific advice in relation to their brief detailed in the Research & Research Related Committees Governance Chart (PDF).
The University’s Research Strategy and Policy Committee (RSPC) is responsible for advising the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) (and Senate) on all aspects of research policy. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) is, ex officio, Chair of the Research Strategy and Policy Committee accepts full managerial responsibility for all aspects of research administration at the University, including policy formulation, disbursement and administration of internal research funds, administration of applications and grants from formal external agencies, administration related to contract research, the administration of matters relating to the three ethics committees, and matters involving intellectual property.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) is also ex officio Chair of the Research Management Committee (RMC). Membership of this Committee includes the Divisional Associate Deans (Research) and is designed to allow two-way communication between the DVC(R) and the Divisions.
With regards intellectual property, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) chairs the Intellectual Property and Commercialisation Committee (IPCC), which provides advice to the Vice-Chancellor on strategy and policy in the areas of intellectual property, innovation and commercialisation.
The Intellectual Property and Commercialisation Management Committee (IPCMC) is responsible for management of the day-to-day intellectual property and commercialisation matters and processes and provides advice on these matters to the Vice-Chancellor.
Macquarie University is fully committed to the concept of total quality management, and accordingly has developed Strategic Management plans for all areas of the University. The University's Research Strategic Plan and Research Office Strategic Plan (see "Strategic Directions"), are working documents revised regularly.
In accordance with these Strategic Directions, the University has nominated 16 Concentrations of Research Excellence (CORES). The University has also invested significant resources to support postgraduate research by way of the Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship (MQRES) (PDF).
Also in accordance with quality management principles, the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) undertakes regular reviews of policies and procedures within the DVC(R)'s portfolio.
